Stories in motion. Remembrance practices, historical cultures and historical learning in the German migration society
Overview
The research project examined the question of what a collectively significant past means in the context of diversity in the German migration society. What current challenges does historical learning face in a plural society? How are questions of diversity, belonging, exclusion and demarcation integrated into historical education? Which approaches to historical education can be developed in schools, museums and memorial sites as well as in non-formal education projects? In four sub-projects, the locations, forms, content and the perspective of actors of both institutionalized historical learning (in schools, educational media publishers, museums and memorial sites) and non-formal historical education (e.g. civil society initiatives and projects) were examined. Based on the empirical results, the joint project developed innovative approaches and concepts for historical learning in the migration society as well as learning materials. The University of Hildesheim, the Free University of Berlin, the University of Paderborn and the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | were involved Georg Eckert Institute (Braunschweig). The “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” Foundation, the Federal Agency for Civic Education as well as various museums, memorial sites, teacher training institutes, actors in non-formal historical education and educational media publishers took part as partners and secured access to the four research fields of the project (schools, educational media publishers, museums and memorials and non-formal education projects).
