FAQ Students

After receiving your university account, which you can only create after enrolment, it can take up to 24 hours before you can use PAUL.

You can have a new password set in the Notebook Café on the ground floor of the I building (I0.401).

To do this, you must appear there in person during opening hours and present a valid photo ID, e.g. your identity card.

Common causes of incorrect password entries are

  • Caps Lock (Shift Lock or Num Lock) is activated
  • Upper/lower case mixed up in the password
  • Keyboard layout other than the usual one (e.g. English keyboard)

PAUL has accepted your university account, but your status does not allow you to log in to PAUL.

If you are already enrolled at Paderborn University, created your university account more than 24 hours ago and still receive this message, please contact the Notebook Café on the ground floor of the I-Building (I0.401) or send a message to PAUL support team.

Another reason for the error message “Access denied”:

For security reasons, PAUL uses so-called session cookies, which are only stored on your computer for the duration of the browser session. If you have deactivated the use of cookies in your browser, you will receive the message “Access denied” after attempting to log in.

The user status of a university account must be "Students" or "Teachers" in order to log in to PAUL.

You can check your user status in the ZIM service portal (formerly IMT service portal).

You cannot log into PAUL with the status "Staff".

If your user status is "Student", you have institutionalised your university account more than 24 hours ago and you are still unable to log into PAUL, please contact the Notebook Café on the ground floor of the I building (I0.401) or send a message to paul@uni-paderborn.de

Not every module starts anew every semester. Many modules only start in the winter semester and are only offered for online booking in PAUL in this semester.

If you were on leave of absence in the previous semester and were unable to register for a module in PAUL for this reason, please contact PAUL Support and ask to be added to the module in question at a later date.

You will only be able to register for the courses associated with the module in PAUL once you have registered for the module.

Please use the course registration and deregistration forms on this website.

You should deregister from all courses that you do not wish to attend this semester. Otherwise, you may not be able to register for a desired course in a subsequent semester because PAUL assumes that you have already attended this course!

For modules of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the instructions on the website for module deregistration apply.

Please use this form.

For courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, please contact the KW Student Office.

For modules offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, you can find the relevant information on the module registration website.

There are more than 200 degree programmes at Paderborn University and numerous other possible combinations within these degree programmes - so it often depends on the individual case whether it is possible to register for an examination in PAUL.

Generally speaking:

If you can register for examinations in the examination administration system, you must register for your examinations in PAUL.

However: Teacher training students in the main study programme (state examination) still require certificates, as they must submit these to the "Landesprüfungsamt für Erste Staatsprüfungen für Lehr?mter an Schulen" to register for the state examination. It is therefore not necessary to register for examinations in PAUL!

All students who have enrolled at Paderborn University in their first semester from the winter semester 2011/12 onwards must register for all examinations and coursework in PAUL.

All students whose examination registrations and grades were imported into PAUL in the winter semester 2011/12 (group 2) must register for examinations and coursework in PAUL from the summer semester 2012.

All students who were able to register for examinations and coursework in PAUL from winter semester 2011/12 onwards must continue to register for examinations and coursework in PAUL.

For all economics courses, registration for examinations takes place as part of module registration.

Registration for examinations and coursework in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes of the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics is carried out entirely via PAUL

In all mechanical engineering degree programmes, registration takes place via PAUL.

In all degree programmes in which examination registration was previously required, you must continue to register for examinations - usually in PAUL.

For exam registrations that you cannot make in PAUL, please contact paul@uni-paderborn.de.

You can deregister from examinations and coursework in PAUL in the "Studies" section. The "Exam administration" button in the left-hand menu bar takes you to the "My exams" section. All examinations for which you have already registered are listed here. You can deregister by clicking on the "Deregister" button. If it is not possible to deregister in PAUL because the exam has not yet been scheduled, please send an email to paul@uni-paderborn.de.

It is also possible to deregister from examinations in PAUL after the end of the respective examination registration phase. The deregistration period ends 2 days before the examination date (applies to all examinations with an examination date from 01.04.2024). Please refer to your examination regulations for the exact regulations on exam deregistration deadlines.

The latest information on exam registration and deregistration can be found on the website of the Central Examination Office (ZPS).

ECTS regulation

In principle, each student can take courses totalling a maximum of 44 ECTS credits per semester. (Fak. WiWi - 45 ECTS credits - information page) can attend.

Please note the following information when planning your semester:

  • A Bachelor's degree programme usually provides 180 ECTS credits, i.e. an average of 30 ECTS credits per semester. In principle, however, each student can take courses/modules totalling a maximum of 44 EC TS credits per semester(WiWi faculty - 45 ECTS credits - information page) as a limit value.
  • Students who wish to take more courses/modules than this can submit an application for an exemption to PAUL Support using the form provided before the start of the respective enrolment phase (1st and 2nd enrolment phase or revision phase). You must explain why exceeding the limit is of particular importance for your individual studies and how you intend to cope with this high volume of learning. Please also note any subject area or faculty-specific regulations. The application itself must be submitted to the PAUL mailbox on level A 2.053 .
  • Within the respective enrolment phases, hardship applications for exceeding the ECTS limit can only be approved if reasons are presented that were not already known before the 1st enrolment phase / 2nd enrolment phase.
  • Students are requested to book courses/modules within the planned framework. However, one week before the end of the respective registration phases, those students who have exceeded the limit at that time will be informed by the course managers by email to the IMT email address and asked to ensure compliance with the limit by deregistration from certain courses/modules on their own initiative.
  • If the number of registrations exceeds 44 ECTS points (Fak. WiWi - 45 ECTS points - information page)at the end of the respective registration phases and if no exemptions have been granted, the last registered courses/modules can be automatically removed from PAUL(by the representatives of the respective Dean's Office) until the number of registrations is less than or equal to 44 ECTS points again. Once removed, courses/modules cannot be reactivated.
  • When calculating the ETCS points, the credits listed in PAUL in the course overview apply. For the courses of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the credits listed in the module overview apply ( information page ).
  • All courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities are awarded a flat rate of 3 ECTS credits, regardless of the course you wish to take. Pending registrations are not taken into account when applying the 44 ECTS rule.

Please use this form for your application form - and, if necessary, add another page to your application.

Economics students should submit an informal application to the Office of Student Affairs of the Fac. WiWi.

Glossary

Students and lecturers access PAUL via a web client, while other users use a so-called rich client. In both the web client and the rich client, terms are used in PAUL and the underlying CampusNet software in a very specific way, which may occasionally differ from colloquial usage.

The following glossary has been created to facilitate communication between PAUL users.

In particular, this glossary can help teachers and students to better understand the terms they are confronted with when using PAUL.
